What is Commercial Cleaning?

Commercial cleaning has been booming again over the last couple of years, following the closure of the hospitality industry back in 2020/2021. For companies with any lingering questions surrounding the service, or new upstarts looking for a piece of the market, here is everything you need to know.

What is considered commercial cleaning?

This cleaning practice is the routine and general cleaning of any commercial premise. This can include the cleaning of hotels, shops, restaurants, pubs, offices, warehouses, and more.

The scope of commercial specialty cleaning includes floors, walls, furniture, lighting, ceilings, windows, dining, and kitchen areas and often requires specialist tools and methods.

What’s the difference between commercial and domestic cleaning?

Commercial speciality cleaning is done on business premises like hotels, offices, and warehouses, whereas domestic cleaning is carried out in residential environments.

Domestic cleaning services are for smaller areas and would include familiar tasks like hoovering, cleaning baths and showers, dusting, and basic sanitation. On the other hand, commercial cleaning services are used for larger spaces and venues, like businesses and factories.

What does a commercial cleaner do?

A commercial cleaner is a person or company that provides cleaning services to commercial businesses. They can be hired for one-off cleans or they can do daily, weekly, or monthly cleans for contracted clients. Their tasks can include:

Regular tasks such as cleaning toilets, desks, carpets, and surfaces. They will also take care of removing rubbish bins, refilling toilet rolls, etc.

Monthly tasks like emptying out communal fridges, cleaning appliances, windows, etc.

Commercial cleaners also cover a wider range of specialised cleaning services that include: office deep cleaning, commercial office cleaning, medical and healthcare cleaningcommercial carpet cleaning, and hard floor cleaning.

Commercial Floor Cleaning methods

Commercial floor cleaners utilise a range of specialised methods to clean flooring in commercial properties. The methods are divided into two categories: wet and dry.

Some of the wet methods include steam cleaning, which uses high-temperature steam to remove oil and dirt, and deep extraction, which is a method used in carpet and fabric cleaning. There are also various floor maintenance methods that are used for cleaning and maintaining tiled floors.

In dry cleaning methods, commercial cleaners use encapsulation. This is where a deep-cleaning compound spreads over the carpet, dissolves into the run, and absorbs dust and dirt before crystallising, as well as rotowash. It is a tool with rotating brushes that lift off dirt and suck it into a vacuum.

Commercial cleaners will also use specialist equipment.

For example, commercial vacuum cleaners are required for the heavy-duty needs of office buildings and other indoor public places. Pressure washers are also used to clean building entrances, brickwork, and sidewalks. The highly pressurised water jets can break down and blast away dirt, mould, and other contaminants.

Steam cleaning technology has proven successful for office deep cleans as it destroys bacteria and viruses by breaking down their proteins. In turn, this provides businesses with superior sanitisation and sterilisation services.

Specialist commercial cleaning

There are a few different types of commercial specialty cleaning. These include:

Hazardous materials

Certain premises require the removal of hazardous materials. This can include things like needles in doctor’s offices, nuclear waste at a power plant, and biohazards from labs. It’s important that these premises have professional and highly trained commercial cleaners in place to properly dispose of any dangerous substances or materials.

Deep carpet cleaning

Another specialist cleaning service is deep carpet cleaning, which involves cleaning the carpet below the exterior to remove dirt, marks, and smells. This is a more intense clean than standard carpet cleaning with spray bottles.

At Spotless, our carpet cleaning uses the highly effective Hot Water Extraction technique. We have been using this method of carpet cleaning for over 10 years and find it gives the most effective results for office and commercial carpet cleaning spaces. These are usually stained from high traffic and drink spillages. The machines use high pressure to push hot water and chemicals into the stained fabric to dislodge the dirt particles. At the same time, the machine is extracting around 95% of the moisture back into the machine, along with the dirt.

Hard floor cleaning

Hard floors such as concrete, vinyl, stone, wood, and tiles can also be deep cleaned using a range of machines. The cleaning service is great for end-of-lease, handovers, as a maintenance measure for health and safety, or just a one-off for visiting clients or auditors.

How much does commercial cleaning cost?

The cost of this specialist cleaning will vary depending on the type of cleaning required, the frequency of the cleaning, and the size of the premises. Bespoke quotes can be given based on the information provided.
